In the meantime here are some tips:

  • Wait for the flood waters to subside then you can undertake some basic clean up activities and your insurer will support you with suitably qualified contractors as soon as they can.

House & Contents

  • Where water has entered your property from the roof or internal water system, it is likely that your carpets and furnishing will be able to be commercially dried and cleaned.
  • Where water has entered your property from the ground up, it is likely to be contaminated water so uneconomical to save. If you can, move carpets and soft furnishings out to dry (if weather permits). Disposal of these items will be confirmed in due course.
  • For items that can potentially be restored, store them in a safe place until they can be assessed.
  • If you have no power and your contents are ok, make sure you turn off all appliances at the wall until power is restored again.
  • Dispose of any perishable items such as refrigerated goods. If items are defrosting feel free to donate them. Ensure to keep photos and value of the food. Complete the Food loss schedule below.
  • Any work you have done, needs to be the minimum amount needed to prevent further loss or damage. Any land or engineer work must be referred to the insurer prior.
  • If your home has been damaged and your insurer agrees it is uninhabitable, your policy likely has cover for temporary accommodation.
  • For any damaged contents or food please use the following inventory schedules:

You may have damage to your land, but not your home. There is some cover for this provided by EQC which is detailed in the following documents.

Vehicles:

  • If your vehicle has been submerged, do not drive it. Water damaged vehicles can sometimes lose function suddenly, and air bags can be deployed without warning. Your insurer can arrange to have it towed to be assessed.
  • Please remove any contents items before your vehicle is towed.
  • If you require your vehicle for medical reasons please get in touch so we can discuss next steps with you directly.

Commercial/Farm Assets and Buildings:

  • Where water has entered your property from an internal water system and caused damage, it is likely they will be able to be commercially dried and cleaned.
  • Where water has entered your property from the ground up, it is likely to be contaminated water. If a commercial buidling, you can move carpets and soft furnishings out to dry (if weather permits). Disposal of these items will be confirmed in due course.
  • Take photos of any perishable stock before disposing and complete the Food loss Schedule Form and for any damages to plant, contents and/or tools that are not repairable please complete the Schedule of Loss Form.
